Your first session is four minutes, whatever the bed says.

The bigger the bed, the shorter the session. That is the part nobody explains, so here it is drawn to scale, with where your own skin starts and what it costs before you walk in.

Four beds, drawn to their session length

Each bar is the maximum session that bed will run, on a shared twenty minute scale. A Level 4 is not a longer tan, it is a stronger lamp and a shorter clock. Everyone starts well under the maximum and works up over about two weeks.

Level 1, stand-up booth 20 minutes max

Low pressure, no lying down, nothing touches you. The gentlest thing here and the one to start in if you have never tanned.

Level 2, the lay-down 15 minutes max

The standard bed, 32 lamps with facial tanners you can switch off. Most people live in this one.

Level 3, high pressure 12 minutes max

More bronzing than burning, and the colour holds longer between visits. Twice a week is plenty in this bed.

Level 4, the big one 8 minutes max

Air conditioned, shoulder room, and the shortest clock in the building. Not a starting bed, and the front desk will say no if you ask on day one.

Where your skin starts, in the Level 2 bed

Forty-eight hours between sessions, always, whatever the schedule says. A burn on day two costs you the next two weeks, and there is nothing anyone at the desk can do about it.

The sunless booth

Sixty seconds of spray, three to five minutes to dry, and colour that shows in about four hours and holds for five to seven days. No lamps at all, so there is no waiting period and no forty-eight hour rule.

Come exfoliated and moisturised, with no lotion, deodorant or makeup on. Bring loose dark clothes to leave in, because tight denim will take a stripe off the back of your knees before you get to the car.

This is the one to book the day before a wedding, and the one to book if a lamp is not something you want on your skin at all.

Before you come in

Eyewear is required by law and it is not negotiable. Ours are $4, they are yours to keep, and closed eyelids do not count.
Eighteen to tan in Missouri, with photo ID the first time.
Tell the desk about any medication you are on. Several common ones, including some antibiotics and acne treatments, will burn you in half the usual time.
Pregnancy, a history of skin cancer, or a doctor who has told you to stay out of a bed. Ask them, not us, and the sunless booth is here either way.
Every bed is wiped down in front of you between sessions. If it has not been, say so and it will be done again.
